I created a Udemy course for passive income: Here’s how much I’ve earned to date

Passive income is something a lot of us strive for. It is usually seen as a solution to earn money without constant work, resulting in financial independence.

But passive income is not so simple as it seems. It is not a myth, but it surely’s challenging either. To get real results, it’s worthwhile to invest quite a lot of money and time.

I made a decision to go the time route and here is my experience with creating a web based course, a standard idea for earning passive income.

In July 2023, I launched my first one Udemy SEO course to earn some passive income.

Based on my 6 years of website positioning experience, my course covers how Google works and key website promotion strategies. This can be a concise, 90-minute video course. Because I hadn’t built a private brand and was solely focused on field work, I did not have an audience to advertise my course.

I created the course on my iPhone 13, recording, editing, captioning, and more. It was my first time doing all this.

I believed Udemy would send me some organic traffic, but I only managed to make about 5-7 sales on their platform, about one sale per 30 days due to their promotions.

I learned that getting quite a lot of reviews is crucial on Udemy to beat the competition. I offered the course at no cost on Reddit in exchange for feedback. Nonetheless, many individuals who took the free course didn’t open it and a few didn’t respond. It appears that evidently some people take free courses after which post them on their web sites for profit.

Still, I received useful feedback from those that watched it. Most were satisfied with the content, but some criticized the sound quality and lack of visual effects in some videos.

My experience with Udemy has been mixed. Udem controls prices and takes a 37% cut of each sale. So even when I set the worth of the course to $50, they’ll sell it for $13 and I will be left with just $5 per sale.

Overall, my view of it as a passive income source is more negative than positive. Success on Udemy seems to require a powerful personal brand, and even then, the profit share is important. With out a personal brand, getting began on Udemy might not be very profitable.

I will likely be working on the course until the top of the 12 months, offering free access to feedback and making sales myself. To this point I actually have reached 200 students, of which over 190 have joined through my very own efforts and I actually have made about 20 sales, of which about 15 have joined through my very own efforts.
